Backhousia citriodora 'Lemon Myrtle'
A native evergreen medium shrub or small, bushy tree with dark green, strongly lemon-scented leaves. Profuse clusters of small creamy white flowers are produced at the end of the branches in summer.
Lemon Myrtle leaves can be dried and used in a large range of dishes from sweet to savoury. Use as a native replacement for Bay leaves, dried as a tea, ground as a zesty herb for chicken dishes or even as a unique flavour in desserts.
Very attractive specimen tree or shrub the provides good shade. Can be clipped to a form a neat hedge. Flowers attract butterflies and other beneficial insects.
Grows in a sunny to partly shaded position in rich, moist well drained soil. Prefers semi-shade in hot climates.
Provide protection from frost and hot sun when young. Keep well-watered, especially during dry conditions. Prune to help maintain a compact habit.
